• Prepare information graphics to highlight health and reproductive health service delivery points in the district
• Collect basic information about the services provided both in public and private sectors
• Identify opportunities and potential locations for expanded activities for the project

The mapping activity had two main phases; a) data collection and b) digitization of maps for each district. Data was collected on provision of family planning services, safe motherhood care services and availability of staff by designation to determine the level of services offered by the facility. The geographical coordinates of each facility were also recorded from the readings of a GPS device during the fieldwork.

For digitization, public domain paper maps were used to produce base maps that were geo-referenced by WGS84 system. Then district, tehsil and union council attributes were placed on the base maps. All facilities of each district are shown on maps along with the services offered.

The findings of the survey were initially be used for planning purposes for the project and converted into a user-friendly application for district managers. Mapping exercise provides very valuable data needed by district management teams to plan the delivery of services, to avoid duplication of services between the Departments of Health and Population Welfare as well as facilitates the provision of services in underserved areas and has been welcomed as a very helpful tool by all concerned stakeholders.
